Don't know if I would put so much weight on that - a difference, yes, but not a key item. XP may just be more finicky when it comes to things like proper naming conventions. I haven't run a Samba-2.x installation in years but I have at one time or another had Samba working successfully with everything from the workgroup add-on for MS-DOS to Windows 7.
