Actually, I've performed a network trace, but I was looking for something different. I'm no expert in the SMB protocol, so I appreciate your comments. I'll look for these calls and see what I come up with.

Excel as a sample application is very prone to do that. To make 100% sure, you will need to look at the network trace and look for locking&x calls from server to client without a request. That's what I would look for next. But as you have already done that I can't help anymore. Sorry.
