exactly my problem.
I did use smbadduser BJS:BJS to correspond with the account on both the
linux and windows box.. It seemed to go thru fine but I am a little sketchy
on the user part in general.

I have the same problem with w2k.
My smb.conf is:

[global]
        netbios name = server
        server string = Test 18
        default = global
        workgroup = workgroup
        os level = 20
        encrypt passwords = yes
        wins support = true

[temp]
        comment = Temp directory
        public = yes
        path = /temp

You should also remember to add samba users with smbadduser.
This way it works from the linux side for me. But w2k refuses to explore.
