Any help would be much appreciated. Arrg... The problem was missing user in the group I use for the samba shares. I was mapping to a unix user and didn't add it to the group. Finally, I stopped looking at auth on the member server and moved everything over to the PDC using NFS. When setting it up I was making sure all my permissions were correct and noticed my folly.
