this is exactly what happened to me.

Given that there is no mention of this patch in the samba 2.x docn, who would be responsible for putting it in, I was starting to think i was going mad with this one and as soon as I put in the registry patch everything just worked!!

Joining domain works, but the logon after reboot fails ?

then you perhaps have forget to apply the Sign_or_Seal registry-patch ?
