Remember that %L is the NetBIOS name of the server. When using port 445 there is no NetBIOS being used, so the client doesn't supply the server name and Samba can't get %L for you.

I will say that as someone who is not an expert on the guts of Microsoft Networking and certainly not an expert on either its history of development OR samba's history of development I found this to be extremely confusing and feel that this could be explained a little better.
