Have you checked the Samba-Guide.pdf? That is the book "Samba-3 by Example" 
and can be downloaded from http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba-Guide.pdf

Chapters 1- 3 should get you started and over this obstacle. The cause of your 
problem is that your Windows clients are not able to resolve the netbios name 
of the samba server to its IP address.
