I'm not aware of that setting on the client side. Our domain has all flavors of Windows from Win9x to Win XP so I believe the domain allows for pre-windows 2000 auth
I'm starting to not think it is a Samba issue. The thing is, we create our own OS images for mass/fast loads and I'm using that image... And I can't connect. But another tech hand loaded XP and he can.
