Setting wins server or not does not change anything. The problem I
have is, that a system from a different subnet can't query the wins
server and wins.dat is empty (should be the pdc itself be in there?)





Never use both "wins server" and "wins support" at the same time.  When you

hmm, maybe samba should complain (and not to start ?) when both of them is set ?

specify a "wins server", you are telling Samba to go somewhere else to get
it's WINS data.  When you tell it "wins support = Yes", you are telling
Samba to be the WINS server.  Just remove the "wins support" entry from
your config, then point your clients to the IP address of your Samba
server.

That should do the trick for you.
