Easier to use the disk quotas. This can be configured on a per user or group basis.

First add this to your /etc/fstab:

/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 / ext3 defaults,usrquota,grpquota 1 1

Then restart. After the restart, run the quotacheck command. You may need to create a script to start disk quotas when the computer starts. After it is setup, use the edquota -u <username> command to edit the quota sizes. Here is a link for more info:

You can also configure quotas using the Webmin utility (which I find much easier).
