well , if /tmp/.winbindd/pipe doen't exist nothing will work since winbind's clients use it to communicate with winnbind. there is no "pipe" file in /tmp/.winbindd after you start winbind ? it should be created when winbindd starts. check that /tmp/.winbindd directory owned by root .
