No, I don't think that is the problem. I have the ldap suffix directives in my smb.conf's, and it doesn't cause problems. Is the computersdn directive (and friends) correct in smbldap.conf? I have:

        usersdn="ou=People,${suffix}"
        computersdn="ou=Computers,${suffix}"
        ...
