some security defaults have changed since the 3.0.x series, e.g. lanman auth = No is now default. You might want to check this with testparm -vs | grep "lanman auth" Setting "lanman auth = Yes" in your smb.conf now might not be enough to let you connect again from win98. As root, use pdbedit -Lw or pdbedit -Lw your_win98_user to see whether the lanman hash is still there, or "XXXXXXX...XXX" out.
