Title: RE: [sambar] tweaks {03}

That's odd - nowhere in Rodney's original message did he ever mention the word "proxy."  His exact question concerning Sambar was "How can I make sambar the faster gun in town?"  You obviously are not aware of the server's capabilities if you think it only proxies connections.

More than one CPU can make a difference.  The OS is SMP, therefore it can use the second CPU leaving the first CPU, which non-SMP aware applications will use, available for processing.

I read the discussion of making a proxy more powerfull. I'm very amazed about the discussion. Rodney asked to speedup a proxy server. 768 meg and a 1800 MHZ cpu should be enough for a proxy. The more ram, the more better would not be right. You will run in the case where putting 256 meg or 515 meg in the server will result in the increase of 1% performance.

4 CPUs?????  8 CPUs????? 16 CPUs???????? Only when the application is able to use more cpu's - when it is smp build - then more cpu's will make sense. Informations on RAID: www.raid.com or www.raid.de .

So, in my opinion when you need a machine with more then 256 MB for a proxie, kick the proxy away. Some prof. firewalls will work with 128 megs of ram with aceptable speed!!!!!! I don't know it it would be the best way to kick sambar away anyway. Because there are many unsolved problems and nobody is able to help the users. You buy a non-working product for something about 100 USD and you aren't getting some support.

Man, this group is quite these days. So, let's start some discussion. Namely, I've just built a 1800mhz machine with raid and run the server off a differant drive than the Operating system. Both drives ata100 7200 rpm.

Here's the question. How much ram would you put in it? Is 768meg enough? How can I make sambar the faster gun in town? Gimmie some tweaks here relating to sambar and NT.

Highest Regards,
