Local work could also be part of it.  Anything you do directly on the
machine uses twice the processing & memory than remote work.  You probably
notice that after it sits for a couple hours it seems faster.  SQL is going
to suck the juice out of it too :-)

That 486 I mentioned - the minute I log on the performance deteriorates, but
if I leave it alone it runs forever; so I don't have a monitor or keyboard
attached to it.
