Thanks, experts for helping me understand things a little better.  I
now see the \n and \t  etc won't work with a browser; you must use
html tags.  Also, putting in the path to the perl.exe allows the DOS
window to work; using both the tags and \n etc will allow to debug in
either environment.  The book I was reading said to use -wT at the
end of the #! line; but the DOS window gave me a message saying  'too
late for "-T" option'.  I'll solve this one later, probably when I
get in trouble without -T.  Now, if I can get some confidence in
what's going on, it's on to CGI scripts.  Thanks to everyone.  :o
