AFAIK, you are correct about Epson scanner drivers; they are binary-only. HP's offering (libsane-hpaio) is free software. The catch comes with a very small number of HP devices. For modern devices I second Alexander Pevzner's comment. Anyone with a recent Brother, Canon, Epson, HP or Samsung can free themselves from being tied to vendor drivers. -- Brian.
