Somehow I missed the first message in this thread, but this is
something thats not come up here since my scanner NOW is a USB.

But, prior to that, I had a Colorado 600p which was, and I can
relate a story. One evening after I had sent a 40 page file to the
printer, the missus came in and wanted a page scanned. I dropped it
on the scanner and fired up the single purpose (not sane related)
driver I was then using and asked it for a preview, totally
forgetting that the parallel port was busy, which it did with only
a second or so stoppage of the printer, then I asked it for the
real thing, which it did and that stopped the printer in the middle
of a line of graphics. When the scanner was done, the printer
fired right back up with no visible glitches in the output of those
2 pages.

So if you're asking can you print and scan at the same time, the
answer is yes IF the scanner driver plays nice. Does sane do that?
I dunno.
