Isn't the worst case when the udev/HAL/whatever magic fails that there is no nice "just works" experience for the user? I.e. the user may only have to launch the appropriate application manually or re-start it. If I am right, such a convention is not actually an API (fatal crash if something doesn't match to the API) but just a nice-to-have convention for a nice-to-have "just works" experience.
