Hey all, I've been busy working on Dochickey hardware information project for a while but I've formulated a plat for getting scanners which require firmware to be installed nicely (i.e without user intervention):
1) Hardware information says what the scanner is 2) If it's more than one model available the user can choose the model 3) once the model is known information about where the firmware is available is made available to sane via HAL both in the form of a location on the cd and online. 4) sane backend can then do what it likes in order to install this firmware and ask for the CDs or go online to fetch the files.
