Hello friends, I'm very happy that I find my HP 7400c - avision backend - fully functional at my ubuntu 16.10 box again. Just adding ppa:rolfbensch/sane-git and updating the system/sane did the trick.
Up to now no single failure - coloured or b&w, single or multiple pages - everything works fine. Whoever did this - thank you very much, man (or madam?), you gave life back to my old scanner!
