Just a reminder that the deadline for applying to take part in the LIVEness
event at Bournemouth University is next Friday 20th Jan.
Please see call below.
Call for participants
Why would you make live work in an age of mass communications? Why work in more
or less the only field which still insists on presence? For artists interested
in “the contemporary” this area of live performance seems like a bit of a
backwater. Do you have something against mass-reproduction? Do you work from
some quaint notion about immediacy and real presence?
I don’t know.
Answer the question.

The Experimental Media Research Group (Emerge) at Bournemouth University
invites calls for:
LIVEness
A one-day intensive multidisciplinary exchange laboratory for practitioners who
wish to explore concepts, philosophies and technologies of the LIVE through
creative practice.
Date: Friday 27th of April
Location: Bournemouth University
Deadline for proposals: Friday 20th Jan.
Description of the day:
A one-day intensive experimental workshop for artists, writers, choreographers,
media practitioners and technologists - seeking to develop and extend their
critical understanding of the LIVE - to deepen and underscore artistic creative
practice and ultimately further future collaborations.
The aim of the workshop is to further understanding and critical awareness of
the conceptual and technical issues that relate to the notion of the LIVE.
Throughout the day attendees will engage in a number of workshop and knowledge
sharing events with the other participants, a facilitator and the
multidisciplinary members of the BU Emerge research group. Through this
sharing, participants will obtain a deeper understanding of how these issues
relate to their personal as well as the extended field of creative practice.
It is hoped that this exchange will also foster opportunities for future
collaboration in creative outputs and funding applications.
Indicative Schedule
The day will start with a keynote presentation framing the theme for the event.
Through a series of short presentations participants will then explore how
notions of 'the live' impact on their own working practice. Participants will
then be split into small groups to further develop the notion of the LIVE in
relation to creative practice and critical dialogue, with the view to creating
a response to the challenges of addressing liveness in your work. Technical
support for the creation of content will be provided. At the end of the day,
groups will be encouraged to share their findings, be that through performance,
presentation or otherwise….
How to apply:
Participants may apply for the limited places through this open call. We will
announce whether you have been successful by the beginning of March.
In order to apply please submit 500 words stating how you explore notions of
Liveness in your practice and how you would benefit from attending the workshop.
