A battered land, devastated people, destroyed lives…
As the tragedy of Bihar unfolds before us, the Art of Living has pledged the
proceeds of this concert to help the victims of this flood.
Titled Brahma Naad, the concert is based on the ancient ragas mentioned in
the rare Gandharva Veda, which says that classical music has the power to
transform and harmonise lives through its ragas. Ragas mean colours; and
that which brings colour to life is music.
The concert, steeped in the science of musical vibrations believed to soothe
and heal and to spread the message of peace across the world, hopes to raise
funds which shall be employed in the rehabilitation of lakhs of people who
are braving the fury of the Kosi.
*BRAHM NAAD*
The ancient history of Indian music traces its origin to the first sound of
the universe called the Brahm Naad. Brahm Naad is the music of the cosmos.
It is the celestial music to which nature throbs and sways.. Pulsating with
energy, it is the very first sound of creation.
Entrenched within all religious scriptures, the Brahm Naad has been given
equal importance in almost all systems of faith. It appears in the Bible -
"In the beginning was the word and word was God" (John 1.1), it is called
the Kalma in Islam, the Shabd in Sikhism and Naad in Hinduism.
This Anahad Naad - the soundless sound, has been mentioned by Guru Nanak,
Kabir, Raidaas, Bulle Shah, and Meera as the music that exists in and can be
heard from the depth of one's being.
On the authority of the ancient texts, it is accepted that music and chants
embody positive energy. The creation of the universe and all its creatures,
comes from the primordial sound – Brahm Naad.
Music resonates within us and can constantly connect us to the harmonies of
the cosmos. That is why listeners of music are transported to great levels
of joy, happiness and love.
The power of the vibrations of classical music to heal, harmonise and
activate core human values has also been scientifically proven by numerous
researchers and scientists, who have used musical applications in
experimentation, special education, therapy and medicine.
*VISION*
His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder of the Art of Living Foundation,
which is the largest volunteer based Non-Government Organisation (NGO) in
the world, has conceptualized this concert to capture the very essence of
the universe and reinforce the supreme energy of music.
In keeping with His vision and mission of a stress-free, violence-free
planet, where individuals contribute towards the goal of a One-World Family,
this initiative resonates with a two-fold purpose.
It endeavors to uplift the practitioners of the musical discipline, and to
simultaneously revive this ancient legacy of India.
Moreover, it is intended to epitomize the universality of music, a
discipline that can cut across boundaries and countries, to spread the
message of peace and harmony through the unifying power of its vibrations.
*THE EVENT: 2 DAYS – 1000 SITARS – 1 STAGE*
For the first time ever, 1000 sitarists will play together, on one platform,
in a two-day concert. This 1000-piece sitar orchestral ensemble will have
the participation of national and international sitar players from all over
the country and the world.
The initiative is being spearheaded by Art of Living singer, Ms. Chitra Roy,
M.Phil in classical music from Delhi University with a gold medal, who has
also received advance training at the Gwalior gharana.
The instrument of emphasis in this symphony, the sitar, embodies the rich ad
regal musical heritage of India. A 1000 sitarists, accompanied by musicians
on the flute, tabla, dholak, sarod, sarangi, pakhawaj, veena, keyboard,
mrudangam and ghatam, will fuse skillful composition with artistic
expression to create a potent symphony.
This first of its kind live concert will be the grandest in the Art of
Living tradition of showcasing ancient arts on one platform. The Art of
Living has pioneered initiatives such as:
February 17th - 19th 2006, Bangalore: For the first time in the history of
Indian music, more than 3800 musicians from all over South India gathered
together to perform during the Foundation's Silver Jubilee celebrations.
Musicians playing 782 violins, 770 veenas, 10 vichitra veenas, 60 tamburas,
10 mandolins, 138 nadaswarams, 750 flutes, 650 mridangams, 100 ghatams, 100
kanjiras, 138 tavils, 30 morsingas, 20 keyboards, 150 guitars and 92
saxophones enthralled all present with soul stirring symphonies.
November 28, 2006, Cochin, Kerala: The Art of Living entered the Guinness
Book of World Records with the maximum number of artists,1200,
simultaneously performing the Mohiniyattam dance as part of the Silver
Jubilee celebrations.
*OBJECTIVE*
This live concert will provide a platform for world-renowned as well as
budding, international as well as local exponents of this Indian art, on a
platform that will facilitate enhanced exposure, awareness and appreciation
of the rich legacy of India's ancient and diverse culture.
Through the sheer energy and power of music, this first-ever 1000 sitar
ensemble shall endeavour to transcend narrow prejudices, to overcome chaos,
to celebrate the joy and the power of the multi-ethnic cultural vitality of
India, and to spread the message of peace and harmony throughout the world.
