We have a requirement for a Application Migration Engineer.
Need three of these!
They have a meeting with the client tomorrow afternoon and must have
resumes of deliverable candidates to present.
End client : Safeway
Location : Pleasanton, CA
Duration : 3-6 months
Preference:
1: locals
2: People that will move for the project
3: Remote if they have rock star resumes
Must have 8/10 Comm skills
These Must be on the resume
Lancope, Wild packets, TCP Dump or Wireshark must have at least two on
the resume
Application Migration Engineer
Necessary Skill Sets
1. Basic Understanding of an Access Control List
2. Ability to read a packet capture in Wireshark or
Wildpackets/Savvius and convert the data to a firewall rule set
3. Basic understanding of Windows/Linux
a. Ability to collect packets via wireshark
b. Ability to collect packets via TCP dump or similar built in
application
c. Ability to check for listening ports etc.
4. Ability to identify and distinguish between protocols with the
help of an analyzer such as Wireshark or Wildpackets/Savvius
a. For example TCP Vs UDP Vs GRE Vs PIM etc.
5. Ability to follow a data path to determine when and where firewall
rules will be needed.
6. Exposure to lancope a plus
Other thoughts/challenges
Lancope
Advantage:
Simplicity – The user runs a report and the tool spits out the
communication for the desired period of time. Large benefit but limited to
the server layer
Can be used to see communication to load balancers and servers
Challenges:
We are providing information security with a level of visibility that will
be removed as servers migrate
Information security will need to provide access
Current equipment is at capacity and will require a purchase
It will only see layer3 netflow.
It is only usable in the server layer
Not a valid option for Legacy DMZ
Not a valid option for Performance DMZ
Not a valid option for the PODs
Protocol Analyzer at the network level
Advantages:
It can be used to collect data in all areas of the network
It will see layer 2 communication that traverses the network
Can be used to see communication to load balancers and servers
Challenges:
Limited number of monitors can be run at the same time. Generally 4 per
environment
To ensure all communication is identified extended multiple day traces will
be required
Conflicts with troubleshooting production failures
Does not see layer 2 communication that occurs within the frame (There will
be instances where this is needed but they should be rare)
Protocol Analyzer at the server level
Advantages:
This method can be used to collect data from all systems
All layer 2 data is visible including communication inside the frame
Traces can be run on many servers at the same time
Challenges:
On systems without built in capture utilities such as windows it will be
necessary to install Wireshark or a similar tool to collect data
Adequate disk space is required to save the traces files.
Multiple day traces required to identify all communication that occurs
No visibility to the load balancer VIPs
