*SCOM Engineer Resource Requirements - Administrative/Maintenance*



*A resource to fulfill the position of a SCOM focused full time engineer in
the Automations & Monitoring group should possess the following skills or
abilities:*

   1. Understands the SCOM architecture and Maintenance:


   1. Can list each of SCOM’s server roles and detail their functions
      2. Can list all the SCOM Windows services and detail their functions
      3. Understands how agent communication function between a managed
      server and SCOM
      4. Is capable and experienced at upgrading the entire SCOM
      infrastructure to the latest critical update version
      5. Understands how SCOM performs some of its own SQL maintenance
      6. Has built a supporting SQL maintenance plan for SCOM
      7. Understands how SCOM RMS and DW databases should be configured and
      how they should be backed up
      8. Understands how to use SQL dashboard and other t-sql queries to
      look for and create missing indexes to improve performance
      9. Experienced with reviewing the Operations Manager windows event
      log and trouble-shooting problems
      10. Experienced with reviewing SQL logs and identifying potential
      problems



   1. Understands the SCOM console and has experience with:


   1. Creating views and scope security
      2. Tracking down alerts to their originating rule or monitor
      3. Creating new or modify new subscriptions/channels/recipients
      4. Pushing out agents and troubleshoot agent installs
      5. Deploying the console via command line
      6. Deleting/adding/updating management packs
      7. Scoping views to limit the amount of information shown in the
      console
      8. Creating new or modifying Alerts/Rules and applicable overrides
      9. Creating new or modifying groups



   1. Understands Management Pack Authoring and has experience with:


   1. Sealing and unsealing management packs
      2. Creating aggregate state monitors that calculate health from child
      monitors
      3. Creating new or modifying existing management packs via the
      Authoring console or via XML
      4. Reading the XML of a management pack and understands the basic
      structure.
      5. Finding example management pack XML examples online and can
      combine multiple examples into one cohesive management pack
      6. Creating via XML or Authoring console the following elements:


   1. Classes
         2. Discoveries
         3. Monitors
         4. Rules
         5. Probes
         6. Presentation elements


   1. Incorporating a script (Visual Basic, PowerShell, DOS Batch) into
      management packs monitor or rule probe
      2. Creating a scripts with arguments and can tie in the scripts
      arguments into overrides.


   1. Understands multiple scripting languages (Visual Basic, PowerShell,
   DOS Batch) and has experience with:


   1. Finding script examples online and combine them into a single script
      to meet a desired functionality (i.e. find files of a certain age in a
      folder)
      2. Reading scripts created by others can understand what the script
      is doing
      3. Using the SCOM script Agent API to return properties back to SCOM
      4. Using script fundamentals (if/then, arrays, looping, hash tables,
      functions)
      5. Using PowerShell SCOM commandlets and creating PowerShell scripts
      to perform SCOM automation


   1. Understands SCOM Reporting and SQL Reporting Services and has
   experience with:


   1. Understand standard t-sql and can write multi-level join statements
      2. Creating or modifying reports in visual studio or SQL Business
      Intelligence Development Studio
      3. Generating reports from generic reports then saving reports in SQL
      reporting services for other users to run and view
      4. Generating reports from stock reports and setting up and email
      subscription via SQL reporting services
      5. Researching t-sql examples and incorporating examples into new
      query to reach desired reporting goal
      6. Can set permissions and move reports around in SQL Reporting
      Services
