*Linux Engineer, Maryland*
Our client is seeking a Linux Engineer for a Contract to Hire opportunity
in Silver Spring, MD.
*Responsibilities*
- Perform systems administration/engineering within a
Linux/Solaris/Windows environment of 300 Linux platforms running a
combination of applications such as Apache, Squid, Bind, MYSQL, POSTGRES,
and various other open source applications.
- A majority of the applications and servers are clustered. System’s
house data elements are clustered and are currently using technology
including, but not limited to: data block replication, multipath disks, and
cluster file systems. Applications are using TCP/UOP load balancers,
clustering application packages built into MYSQL and POSTGRES, and, in some
cases, using a combination of high ability packages such as Heartbeat.
- The successful candidate will have experience installing, configuring
and maintaining clustered applications running on Linux Debian and day to
day operations administration.
*Requirements*
- Linux Debian Engineer with 5+years of experience running 300 Debian
Linux platforms running a combination of applications such as Apache,
Squid, Bind, MYSQL, POSTGRES, and various other open source applications.
- 5+ Experience with Linux Debian or Linux Red Hat and Virtual
Environments in large scale, mission critical organization.
- Working understanding of TCP/IP and the aptitude to apply in multi
stack environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field (i.e., EE, CPE,
MIS, IT).
- 6+ years of experience in Information Technology (IT) with Microsoft
OS knowledge, SMS and Anti-virus applications.
- Experience with system monitoring tools.
- Experience with configuration management and automation.
- Ability to develop technical solutions to a wide range of complex
system-to-systems issues that require ingenuity, innovation and
collaboration with multiple stakeholders.
- Possess excellent oral and written communication skills in order to
build/maintain constructive relationships among customers, government
technical workers, and contractors, and stakeholders to meet tactical and
strategic goals.
- Ability to develop, document, and maintain processes, methods, and
tools.
- Ability to perform and understand multiple tasks simultaneously.

*Skills Required*
- Installation and configuration of operating systems, drivers,
firmware, and OS patches. Including SAN, clustering, Virtual and physical
servers.
- Troubleshoot and performance tune hardware and operating systems.
- Coordinate installation, repair, and upgrades with project managers
and vendors.
- Manage and maintain allocation of SAN storage arrays, LUN management.
- Manage configurations, implementations and maintenance of system
management application technologies, including Apache, Squid, Bind, MYSQL,
POSTGRES, and various other open source applications.
- Work with Engineers and Security Analyst on security related issues
and take appropriate corrective actions to bring non-compliant servers into
compliance.
- Work with technical writing staff to develop and document standard
processes for server installs, upgrades, and other repetitive tasks.
- Participate in a team environment to provide input, meet established
objectives, lead individual projects, and share in team success.
- Complete all required administrative duties and paperwork in a timely
manner.
- Provide 24x7 on-call support for systems administration.
- Provision and administer new and existing Linux utilities including
LAMP environment (Linux, Apache, MySQL, Perl/PhP).
- Provision and administer new and existing virtualization platforms
including:
- VMWare
- Xen
- KVM
- Solaris Virtualization (Physical and logical domains)
- Provision and administer new and existing backup systems' software and
infrastructure; currently EMC Networker.
- Support maintaining data quality through issue identification and
resolution.
- Work closely with Operations and Maintenance teams to support
development of standard operating procedures (SOPs), test strategies and
plans, and training material.
- Assist in developing calibration plans to maintain consistency across
the products.
- Support technical planning, system integration, verification and
validation, risk analysis, and supportability and effectiveness analyses
for all systems within scope. These analyses are performed at every level
of the system, including concept, design, fabrication, installation,
operation, maintenance and disposal.
- Participate in technical working groups consisting of Government
stakeholders and other groups designed to facilitate collaboration and
technical concurrence of requirements, reviews, issues and resolutions, and
technical direction as necessary.
- Work with management to develop and update project schedules,
documentation, and design/requirements packages for review/approval
processes.
- Install and configure Linux platforms running a combination of
applications such as Apache, Squid, Bind, MYSQL, POSTGRES, and various
other open source applications.
- Install, configure and maintain clustered applications running on
Linux Debian and day to day operations administration.
- Perform Linux Debian system administration and troubleshooting tasks
in accordance with project schedule and scope.
- Provision and administer new and existing physical and virtual Linux
severs (RHEL, Debian).
- Expertise in Distributed Replicated Block Device (DRBD) technology for
replication of data sets across geographically dispersed drive arrays over
Linux based secure transport tunnel infrastructure.
- Managing OGC compliant standards with WMS, WFS and WCS services.
- Experience with GEOSERVER and MAPSERVER open-source tools and PostGIS
and MySQL as the back-end database to provide an OpenSource GIS Shared
Hosting System.
- Lifecycle: provisioning, configuration, orchestration and monitoring.
- Perform proactive management of systems and support quality assurance
activities.
- Plan and implement system changes and adjustments to maximize system
availability.
- Evaluate and report system performance.
- Monitor and ensure hardware limits are not exceeded.
- Perform system configuration and update technical documentation tasks.
- Assist in developing test plans, conducting system tests, documenting
and analyzing performance data, and reporting results to support
development of a production architecture.
- Perform configuration management, risk analysis, contingency planning
and work with designated security staff to conduct security reviews and
audits.
- Manage and provide technical support of server hardware and software
tools.
