JOB SUMMARY: Administer and manage the UNIX environment for a Fortune 500
company. Responsible for all aspects of UNIX administration including hardware
and software installations, upgrades, patches, maintenance, performance tuning,
backup/restore strategies and activities, product reviews and recommendations,
and system implementations. Works closely with IT groups including Database
Administration, NT Administration, SAP Basis Administration, Network
Administration, and Application Development to ensure all UNIX systems run
optimally and efficiently.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
· Operational - 40%: The greatest area of responsibility consists of
daily operational activities. This includes user administration, system patches
and upgrades, systems monitoring and tuning, problem detection and resolution,
job scheduling, print management, Disaster Recovery tests, and backup
activities.
· Project Initiatives - 30 %: Participates in project activities. This
encompasses all activities from project inception to implementation. Includes
recommendation of solution and subsequent implementation.
· Planning, Design, and Strategic Recommendations - 15 %: Responsible for
developing strategies for the future direction of the landscape - includes
recommending server and SAN hardware, OS versions, failover technologies,
recommended upgrades, patches, backup and archival strategies and more. Assists
with the project planning, coordination and implementation.
· Process Improvements - 15%: Identify and implement areas for process
improvement. This includes examining and enhancing/implementing best practices,
organizational effectiveness, change management, project management, cost
savings, and operational procedures.
JOB TASKS
1. Plan, perform, manage and coordinate UNIX hardware and software
upgrades, patches, and new installations. Includes operating system installs,
patch upgrades, firmware upgrades, disk and SAN fabric upgrades, maintenance
level patches, and vendor recommended upgrades.
2. Recommend hardware and software requirements
3. Proactively identify and implement systems/performance monitoring and
tuning
4. Perform system problem detection and resolution. Includes working with
IBM technical support and other vendors as needed.
5. Coordinate and monitor system backups and restores
6. User ID administration
7. Script development
8. Job scheduling
9. Failover implementation and testing
10. Manage print queues and printer IDs.
11. Create and maintain technical operations and maintenance documentation
12. Participate with the Disaster Recovery planning and testing activities
13. Develop and implement archival strategies
14. Identify and implement areas for process improvement
15. Other duties as necessary to support a multi-system UNIX environment
in a 24x7 environment
TECHNICAL COMPENTENCIES
1. Five years IBM AIX experience - 5.X preferred
2. Working knowledge of IBM HACMP
3. Experience with IBM p Series hardware
4. Backup software experience - preferably IBM Tivoli Storage Manager or
Veritas
5. Knowledgeable of SAN technologies
6. Capable of scripting
