Clear your calendar! For International Womenâs Day, Monday, March 8.... our featured reader will be Sharmili Majmudar. Sharmili Majmudar is a South Asian poet, social justice activist, daughter of Gujarati Indian immigrants and a 2003 resident at the Norcroft Writing Retreat for Women. Her poetry has been featured in various publications, including Contours of the Heart: South Asians Map North America and Riksha. Sharmili rabble-rouses with Mango Tribe and teaches/learns with YAWP! (Young Asians With Power), projects of the Asian American Artists Collective-Chicago. Her recent appearances include the Guild Complexâs Poetry Multiplied series with Pat Payne and Lorna Dee Cervantes, Mango Tribeâs Creation Mythology residency at New York Cityâs Henry Street Settlement House Abrons Art Center and a benefit production of the Vagina Monologues at the DuSable Museum on March 6! By day, Sharmili coordinates a domestic violence program and works with traumatized children and their families.
