Subject: sql studio connections hanging

we have successfully installed sapdb 7.3 on redhat 6.1 (kernel 2.2.12-20).
i have created a new database and we can connect to it from windows using
database manager and sql studio.
i then tried creating another database with the exact same configuration,
except for enabling unicode. i can connect to it from windows using
database manager, but sql studio just hangs when trying to connect.
the database parameters i used were:
        param_rmfile
        param_startsession
        param_init OLTP
        param_put _UNICODE YES
        param_put CAT_CACHE_SUPPLY 300
        param_put DATA_CACHE 2500
        param_put DEFAULT_CODE UNICODE
        param_put LOG_MODE SINGLE
        param_put MAXDATADEVSPACES 5
        param_put MAXDATAPAGES 1024000
        param_checkall
        param_commitsession
        param_adddevspace 1 SYS $HOME/$SID/DISKS01 F
        param_adddevspace 1 DATA $HOME/$SID/DISKD0001 F 25600
        param_adddevspace 1 LOG $HOME/$SID/DISKL001 F 6400

any help on getting sql studio to connect would be greatly appreciated.

thanx

brad
