I just had this error too. The output of reportlab appears to be invalid UTF-8 characters. So, a bug needs to be written against Satchmo not to be in strict mode. I think it should have a UTF error mode that's configurable. But if we can't make it configurable, it should be in ignore. I don't know if this is a change in reportlab, but the version I'm using in the comment at the beginning of the PDF, where it says it's made from the Reportlab program is using curly-quotes (0x93).
