It only happens with non-html email and I found the template difference
below.
In _order_detail_table.html ( correct ), subtotal is defined as:
{{item|discount_line_total:sale|currency}}
In _order_detail.txt ( incorrect ), subtotal is defined as:
{{item.sub_total|currency}}
