Chris, thanks for the reply.  I installed PIL through my Linux
distribution's package manager:

$ emerge -pv dev-python/imaging

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

I am also able to import Image in the Python interactive shell:
>>> import Image
>>> 

And, as I mentioned, Satchmo correctly creates a thumbnail on the
filesystem right next to the original file.  That thumbnail is correctly
displayed in the admin section.
