You are right, this is an obsolete sentence on several places of the
documentation. The original complicated product model has been
splitted to the new product model and four submodules in April 2010 by
revision 1753

Configurable Product, Custom Order, Downloadable Product and
Subscription Product can be now enabled or disabled by uncommenting or
commenting out the lines
'product.modules.configurable',
'product.modules.custom',
'product.modules.downloadable',
'product.modules.subscription',
in INSTALLED_APPS of settings.py
Product Variation is now a standard part of Configurable Product which
is enabled/disabled together.
It will be fixed soon in docs.
