Developing software that you are not actively using must be really hard. 
What if a group of core commiters was formed? If these commiters are 
managing or developing Satchmo projects actively it will be a lot more 
natural for them to maintain the source. It might also be a good idea to 
have commiters that are specialized in a specific aspect of Satchmo: like 
products, settings, payment, shipping ... etc

I have some very general ideas of how to improve Satchmo, but lack the 
vision for a concrete roadmap. Basically, I think that Satchmo should be 
more of a library than an app. That would make it infinitely easier to 
customize a Satchmo site, but installation could be kept easy via 
"skeleton" or example sites included in the project.
