Don't buy the kids edition. Its basically the same as the regular edition, but the pieces are bigger so you can't take any of the expansion sets.
All the expansion sets require the base game. We've got Cities and Knights (expansion) and Seafarers of Cataan(expansion) We like Cities and Knights better. Although you can combine Cities and Knights with Seafarers for a really interesting game.
