Details:

Savane is the continuation of the Savannah software project by the same team
of developers and contributors, under a slightly modified name (Savane is the
French word for Savannah).

This change was made to avoid confusion between this software and the GNU
Development Platform, both named Savannah.

At first, Savannah was not meant to be a software project but just an
installation of the software SourceForge 2.0 for GNU. But soon after Savannah
was set up, SourceForge became proprietary software. Since improvements to the
source code were necessary to be able to run Savannah in decent conditions, it
was for a team of Libre Software enthusiasts logical to continue the adventure
by creating a fork, called after the name of the development platform they
were maintainers of.
