They definitely looks unrelated.

No. This is purely a matter of getting apache executing a PHP file
which havent got the .php suffix. Savane configuration is not
involved.

I'm wondering if your mod_rewrite works well. Can you make tests of
mod_rewrite (following its documentation) to make sure it works?
