Follow-up Comment #11, task #3021 (project savane):
Seems that now that it works with both MSIE and decent browser, it does not
work with old version of konqueror, that unfortunately seems still widely
deployed at CERN.
For these, and alternate menu will be available as option. It is apparently
not possible to write a decent menu like the new one for all browsers without
having an overcomplicated thing. So I think the way to go is to stick to the
easy pure CSS that is currently here for Mozilla+Konqueror, stick to the
javascript adaptation used for MSIE, and add another one, a last one, picked
by users, that provide the menu in a basic fashion, always compatible but
less powerful, as it wont make possible to access all the links of a project
but only the one of the current tool - like in the menu of 1.4.
