The good way to go would be to use pam as described in sr #389 (that should
move to the cookbook actually), if the authentication tool you use support
pam.
If it does not, it gets more complex, indeed.
That's the way at LCG Savannah (CERN) users log into Savane using their AFS
account and password, AFS being some kind of reimplementation of Kerberos.
