Follow-up Comment #1:
You can force savane to use english only by simply removing locales files,
which are savane.mo files.
Depending on how you installed savane, they may be at different location.
However, normally, character encoding in savane should always be utf-8. If it
is not, there is a serious bug somewhere, there is something misconfigured,
that could lead later to corrupted data during future software upgrades.
