Hello,

Is there any reason why directory indexes are forbidden at nongnu.org?
(and also at gnu.org/software/* in general?)

This user suggests it is inconvenient and could be activated.

Details:

I would like to provide an automatically generated index of some directories
of my homepage. I tried to put 'Options Indexes' into .htaccess but this does
not seem to have any effect.

What are the reasons to disable directory indexes sidewide? Everybody can
visit the CVS so privacy can not be obtained by such a configuration.
