I tried to do an anon-cvs checkout this evening of emacs and received a permission denied error for /mnt/ramfs. I fixed the problem by switching the filesystem type of /mnt/ramfs from ramfs to tmpfs. I believe tmpfs is actually what we should be using in this case -- we can limit ram usage, and we can monitor the status of the memory being used with df.
