AFAIK, most people use cvs2git which is part of cvs2svn: 
https://github.com/mhagger/cvs2svn <https://github.com/mhagger/cvs2svn> 

I think it is pretty stable, well-tested, and well-documented.

The $Id$-lines should all be removed because that doesn’t work with git.
