About soundcards and jack, one thing to keep in mind is external USB 
soundcards. I discovered that it's a simple way to obtain reasonable latencies
with jack, it's well supported on linux, can be cheap (I have a behringer,
probably the simplest one out there) and is simply the only solution on a
laptop.
