Cees' answer is correct, thanks a lot. Let me remind that one of the reasons behind that change is to give you control on how and when you do those conversions. However, one question that has never been answered is: should the default single/playlist operators hide an implicit conversion to stereo (or at least to a fixed number of channels, allowing mono and stereo) -- the raw versions could be named single.raw/playlist.raw/etc. Putting this simple default for simple users seems like the sensible choice, but it seems that only a few people need audio_to_stereo, and it costs a little.
