Thanks, guys. Using all this as a starting point, I kept playing around, experimenting with use flags, and finally got it installed. I don't remember the exact order in which I did what, but anyone else using Gentoo is welcome to compare use flags and packge.* with me, if that will help someone else.
Basically, it came down to use flags so all the right things got compiled.
