I shifted to KDE 4 after trying out Gnome 3/Gnome fallback and looking at the more minimalist options of things like XFCE and LXDE. While there are a few minor incompatibilities with sawfish I'm finding with KDE 4 I was able to get back 80-90% of the workflow I had with Gnome 2 and a couple of things seem to work slightly better (the KDE 4 virtual desktop is slightly easier to work with than the Gnome 2 one was, for example).
