Is the role you are trying to replace the role that the website record
points to?
Normally you can just swap out the role by editing the farm unless a
website points to it. The easiest way I've found to deal with it is
create another farm (you don't have to start it). Then edit the
website record switch it to your temp farm, now you can edit the role
in your original, then go back and switch the website back to your
original farm.

bundled it. Now, i wish to replace the old ami with the new one.
However, each time i try to change this from the edit menu i get an
alert stating that i need to keep my old ami otherwise i delete the
entire farm and make new farm with that new ami.
