Hi Nick Thanks for pointing that out. I ran the command and could see ephemeral 0 which is great .. This is mapped to /dev/sdb and /dev/sdb is mounted on /mnt. I haven’t done any customizing and have used the standard scalr image (app-apache-centos-ebs -CentOS 5.5 Final - AMI ami-a26793cb)
I just need to know if I can rely on this? Srini From: Nick Toursky Sent: Thursday, March 01, 2012 7:24 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Are there any non-EBS Base or App roles available? Srini, To ensure this is an ephemeral volume, fetch the following URL from the instance: http://169.254.169.254/latest/meta-data/block-device-mapping/ You'll see 'ephemeralX' entries there, which contain ephemeral block device names. For eg in a m1.small instance, the /dev/sdb is of 160 GB and is mapped to /mnt When I describe the image, I cannot see the instance storage mappings. The fact that the storage exists means: Either when the image was registered, the instance storage was specified to be mounted or is being done by Scalr when it starts the instance. Can you please check and confirm? Will be a big help to me as I can get all my stuff on to /mnt then and get started! Also the role builder will support only EBS backed. Net-net, I will have to use EBS backed instances only. Is my understanding correct? Correct. However for temporary storage of data, I can in the instance mount the instance storage and put the files in there since they do not need to be persisted. Correct. All instances have ephemeral storage. Most likely you need to mount it. On EBS-based instances root FS / placed on EBS but you still can mount ephemeral storage. I was looking at roles which do not have EBS but instead use Instance Storage. Our App roles (bsaed on JBoss) do not need EBS (no state) and I would be happy to use instance storage. Scalr no longer provide non-ebs shared images and Role builder supports only ebs-based ones. S3 images are very slow, also bundling process is very unstable and can take hours. Can you please describe your case, why you need s3-based images? Thanks, Igor On 28 February 2012 07:24, Srinivasan Subramanian <[email protected]> wrote: I need non-EBS roles. In order to use role builder, wanted to start with an App image and then customize it to create the custom App image. I am unable to find any non-EBS roles. Any ideas where I can get some non-EBS backed Centos images? Regards Srini -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "scalr-discuss" group.
