Please RSVP to sts <[email protected]>@hks.harvard.edu<[email protected]> by 5pm Thursday, April 28th. * * *Abstract:* Eddie Haam’s research focuses on a probabilistic pattern recognition algorithm (called ‘MCTEST’) for time-uncertain series data. The MCTEST algorithm has a range of applications, including speech recognition, electrocardiogram signals or gene expression time series. The algorithm can also be used to analyze climate proxy records, such as ice cores, ocean sediments, and speleothem growth in a cave, all of which have large time uncertainties. Carbon dating, for example, carries +/-2000 year uncertainty. Since real climate events created the climate proxy records, the use of MCTEST to analyze these records may provide a more robust analysis of climate systems than that generated by a computer simulated General Circulation Model (GCM). This talk will focus on the mechanisms of abrupt warming climate events that occurred during the last glacial periods based on an MCTEST analysis of proxy records. It will also cover how the MCTEST algorithm, which is under consideration for a United States patent, is viewed by businesses and the legal community. *Biography*: Eddie Haam is currently completing his doctorate in Applied Mathematics at Harvard. He received his BS in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University and Masters degree from MIT. He has recently won a postdoctoral fellowship funded by National Science Foundation, Division of Mathematical Sciences.
